Pricing, Weights, Measurements and Capacities ![]() ![]() Then there is another key factor Kierski highlighted: the style of the restaurant, and how that can inform whether a managerial position is desirable or not. "I would rather be on my feet running around all day because time just flies," he says. For one, he simply preferred the role of being a waiter, even if managing involved more leg work. In Kierski’s case, becoming a manager wasn’t appealing for multiple reasons. “Unless these workers are lucky enough to get a job doubling or in some cases tripling their income then it's going to be practically impossible for them to immediately take over those expenses,” said one LinkedIn member, noting that she works with caregivers who are wary of the cliff effect. In some cases, people might fear the “cliff effect,” which describes when a promotion would raise a worker’s pay just enough to make that worker ineligible for government assistance, but not enough to cover the loss of that assistance. A number of workers in hourly jobs - nevermind those other roles - have expressed a variety of reasons for doing not accepting promotions. The idea of avoiding a managerial role isn’t all that subversive, if you listen to enough stories. “After about a month of managing, I found myself doing maybe 20 percent less work for about one-third of the money, as well as ridiculous tasks like counting all the change in all the drawers at the end of every night.” When becoming manager isn’t desirable “I took the manager position during weekdays and maintained my waiter position on weekends for cash flow,” Kierski says. What he found was that he did less work, but for much less pay, while also tasked with tedious responsibilities. He noticed this as he worked in both a waiter and manager role at the same establishment. In Kierski’s case, becoming manager was simply not worth it, in a very literal, monetary sense. “Manager positions seem like almost an insult because it's called a promotion, but you make much less for the same amount of time and headache,” he says. If you’re wondering, there’s a reason Kierski totally glosses over the idea of becoming a manager. ![]() “The only step above was to be the owner, which I don't have millions for.” When I became a waiter it was basically the ceiling of what I could achieve over there and that was like seven-ish years ago,” Kierski says. “What you don't learn is how to move ahead. Then there are factors that he’s much less enthusiastic about. ![]() “First steps and words like 'daddy' were there for me to witness and enjoy and those moments are priceless.” ![]() “Because of the way things worked out, I didn't miss a thing,” Kierski tells LinkedIn. Take 27-year-old Lucas Kierski, a Brooklyn-based waiter who has worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade, and loves what the flexibility of his schedule means for his ability to raise a family. Those managerial positions are generally desirable too, since they usually involve less taking of orders, and more giving them, while making more money.īut that's not always the case. So, if a worker does a great job for long enough, you’d likely expect her to be on the way to becoming a manager. Promotions are widely accepted as a sign of excellence. ![]() ![]() ![]() Web-based, so it runs on all platforms, and it can also be installed as standalone app on most devices. In my experience, while it's not hard to learn Affinity, there is a slight learning curve. They also made Affinity very similar to PS in usability, so people could switch easily. ![]() ![]() “Rez” turned out to be a great companion to our heartbroken Aussie, “Ruger”, who lost her best friend in a lightening strike. Our daughter who lives in Denver, saw a rescue dog from New Mexico who she thought would be good replacement, though a pup. Because he was the best rescue dog we’ve ever had. We had to put him down that morning because he couldn’t stand and was crying in pain. Our beloved dog, Fred, suffered a stroke and died within hours. Our smoke alarms went off and it was then we realized it had been hit. I wanted to let you know that I’ve always loved that song, it was haunting and kinda relevant for no reason, but so good! This past July 18, on my birthday, our house got hit by a lightning bolt that jolted us out of bed and shook the neighborhood. Now, more than two decades years later, the song is synonymous with a very specific time and place, and remains a staple of the band’s live shows, without leaving a dry eye in the house. “It was definitely very bittersweet and surreal and strange to see this impactful event in our country and then have a song that we wrote be associated with it.” On May 6, Throwing Copper was the bestselling album in the US, shifting more than eight million copies in the states alone. “It sort of became the de facto song ,” Gracey said. A remix of Live’s single, created by an Oklahoma City DJ, which included sound bites from Bill Clinton and Tom Brokaw, as well as fire-engine and ambulance sirens, became the soundtrack for tributes for the event. On April 19, 1995, 168 people were killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. Gracey believed the way the song slowly “builds from starting very quiet to the crescendo that comes at the end” is one of the things that made it stand out. By the spring of 1995, the record had jumped to triple-platinum. At the time of the single’s release, Throwing Copper was a gold record. What you’re seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life.”įor the next two years, “Lightning Crashes” dominated alternative radio and MTV, peaking at No.6 on the US Mainstream Top 40 and No.1 on both the US Alternative and Mainstream rock charts. “Nobody’s dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. “While the clip is shot in a home environment, I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room,” said Kowalczyk. Helmed by veteran music director Jake Scott, the video was shot in an old mansion in downtown Los Angeles and apparently caused some misinterpretations around the song’s intent. “Lightning Crashes” owes much of its success to the extremely 90s music video that was played on constant rotation on MTV. The band debuted “Lightning Crashes” at Woodstock ’94 and released the official single a month later, on September 24, 1994. “Of course, it became probably the biggest hit from Live, and so it was ironic that I was told that, but yet the people chose that to be the biggest song,” said Kowalczyk. ![]() Clocking in at about five-and-a-half minutes, the record label thought the song was too long. The album’s first single was “Selling The Drama” followed by “I Alone.” Live’s drummer, Chad Gracey, said when “Lightning Crashes” was presented to record executives, the band was told the song would become a single “over their dead bodies”. Throwing Copper was released on April 24, 1994. Lewis was also a registered organ donor when she died, she helped save the lives of many people, including a ten-month-old baby who received her liver. ![]() “It was something that we hoped would honor the memory of a girl we grew up with and help her family cope with the sorrow – which it seems to have accomplished – keeping with the theme of the song,” Kowalcyzk said, in a 1995 interview in Spin magazine. The band dedicated the song to Lewis, who was only 19 when she died. Around this time, Barbara Lewis, a longtime friend of the band, was killed by a drunk driver while fleeing from the police after a robbery in York. “Lightning Crashes” was recorded and produced with Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison as part of the sessions for Live’s sophomore effort, Throwing Copper, at the famed Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, during the summer of 1993. Just a few years before, Kowalczyk discovered the writings of Indian spiritualist Jiddu Krishnamurti, whose philosophy of living life from a place of selflessness and humility influenced the singer’s songwriting process, as well as the band’s creative philosophy. ![]() |
